Our Aim

The Development of Residential Aged Care
That Is

Community based
• Community assessed
• Community monitored

Providing

A safe, homelike and family-friendly environment created and maintained

by the residents, extended families, friends and local community
- a n d     s u p p o r t e d     b y   G o v e r nme n t

Our needs in Later Years Are Our Personal Responsibility

We elected our Government to oversee our aged care industry.
This has led to an impersonal system which is geographically removed from local situations and unable to meet the
individual needs of our elderly and others in care.
We seek the Introduction of locally selected committees to monitor and assess residential care facilities. These
committee members would know and understand their individual community needs.

Together we can make a difference

We can maintain all human rights for our vulnerable elderly and disabled citizens so they can continue
to live as valued and loved members of our community when they move into residential care facilities.
This task is
Our Duty, Our Privilege and Our Right.

This Story Motivated the Formation Of
Daniel's Shield

In 2006 an accredited not for profit nursing home had in excess of 90 patients.
  • More than 50 of these were high care.
  • For many hours a day an Assistant Nurse was left in charge of the facility.

Assistant Nurses often work prior to obtaining any qualifications. They receive very basic nursing training and are not qualified to attend to all clinical and medication needs of patients.

A 90 year old dying man was not examined by a Registered (qualified) Nurse for at least twelve hours leading up to his death.

During his short stay in the home he developed a very painful pressure ulcer on his lower spine.

Failure of staff to toilet or reposition him for many hours at a time caused this injury.

In the hours leading up to his death he was unable to swallow oral medication but, in the absence of qualified staff, was not provided with any alternative pain relief.

He was conscious most of this time.

When he died, it took the family in excess of twenty minutes to be able to locate any staff to come and attend to their father's needs.

His body was signed over to the undertaker by an untrained carer as no registered nurse was on duty.

Complaints to the Govt. Dpt of Health and Ageing regarding the staffing in this facility was ineffective and this level of staffing has been endorsed by the Department of Health and Ageing

Daniel O'Donnell, a popular Irish singer, was a favorite performer of the gentleman referred to in our central story. Daniel of Biblical fame, fought the lion - and the government of the day - and won! Daniel's Shield honors Daniel O'Donnell's ministry of music to the family of the deceased and seeks the courage of the Biblical Daniel to fight against the abuse of our elderly in care.
